****Appalachian Concerto is a suit of six traditional American tunes arranged for solo lever harp with string orchestra. These are tunes my mother used to sing when I was young, as she would wash dishes. A slow string introduction sets the mood for My Shepherd Will Supply My Need , which is the shape note hymn tune, Resignation . Isaac Watts published lyrics based on Psalm 23 in 1719. The stately hymn tune is transformed into a light hearted jig, which then dives into the energetic Shady Grove, a fiddle tune with lyrics as varied as a patchwork quilt. The harp then introduces Pretty Saro , a sad love song collected by Jean Ritchie of Kentucky . When the strings take over the melody the harp continues with a series of flashy arpeggios. A rustling of feathers, bissbigliando in the harp, leads into The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird played on solo violin. Suddenly the harp introduces sharp angular chords and syncopations with O Johnny's on the Water another of Jean Ritchie's gems. After a moment of tonal melt-down the harp plays June Apple , another rip roarin' fiddle tune. (I wish I were a June apple hangin' on a tree. Every time my true love pass, take a bit of me). Soon the solo violin plays an echo of Cuckoo over the top of June Apple . The ending is a combination of June Apple in the harp as a back ground to a reprise of My Shepherd .
